AnythingLLM vs GPT4All: the actively maintained GPT4All alternative
GPT4All made 'chat with a folder of documents on your own computer' popular. Its last release was in February 2025. AnythingLLM does the same job, ships every few weeks, and does a lot more.
Updated October 2026GPT4All was one of the first apps to make local AI feel easy. Install it, download a model, point LocalDocs at a folder, and chat with your files without anything leaving your computer. A lot of people learned what a local LLM could do because of it.
The trouble is that GPT4All has stopped moving. Its most recent release, v3.10.0, came out on February 25, 2025. The repository has had no meaningful code changes since mid 2025, and several open GitHub issues asking whether the project is still maintained have no response from the team. Nomic's focus has shifted to a commercial platform for architecture and engineering firms. Meanwhile, model families like Gemma 4 and Qwen 3.5 have arrived, and tools like MCP have become standard.
AnythingLLM does what GPT4All did, chat privately with your documents on your own computer, and it is actively maintained. Version 1.17.0 shipped on October 1, 2026.

LocalDocs, grown up
If you used LocalDocs, AnythingLLM workspaces will feel familiar. Add a folder or a set of files to a workspace, and AnythingLLM embeds them locally with its built-in embedding model into a built-in vector database. Ask a question and you get an answer with citations you can click through.
From there it goes further. It handles PDFs (with OCR for scanned pages), Word, PowerPoint, Excel, EPUB, images, and audio and video files through transcription. It can pull in GitHub repos, YouTube transcripts, Confluence spaces, Obsidian vaults, and full website crawls. You can pin documents, choose a different embedder, or switch to a vector database like Chroma, Qdrant, or PGVector if you outgrow the default.
