AnythingLLM vs Msty: the free, open-source Msty alternative you can use at work
Msty Studio's free tier is licensed for personal, non-commercial use only. AnythingLLM is free for work, MIT-licensed, and does more out of the box.
Updated October 2026Msty Studio looks like a free local AI app. Read the license and it is something else. The free tier of Msty is for personal, non-commercial use only. If you use it for your job, you are expected to buy a commercial license. And the app is closed source, so you cannot see what it does with your data.
AnythingLLM is free for personal and commercial use, its codebase is MIT-licensed, and it includes the features Msty charges for. Here is the side-by-side.
Msty's free tier is not free for work
From Msty's terms, updated September 2, 2026: the free license is for "your own, private, non-commercial purposes," and use "for the exercise of your trade or profession for which you are compensated" does not qualify. The terms go on: "If you are using Msty Studio for work-related activities that generate revenue, you must purchase one of these licenses."
That license is Aurum, at $149 per user per year or $349 per user for a lifetime license, according to Msty's pricing page in October 2026. Teams and enterprise plans start at five seats and are quoted.
So a freelancer summarizing client documents, a lawyer reviewing contracts, or an engineer asking questions about their company's codebase all need a paid license to stay within Msty's terms.
AnythingLLM has no such clause. The desktop app is free for personal and commercial use, for one person or a whole company.
Prices that only go up
In December 2025, Msty raised Aurum from $129 to $149 a year and the lifetime license from $249 to $349. In the announcement, Msty said its "prices only move in one direction, up."
AnythingLLM Desktop is free, and the core features in this comparison stay free. An optional Pro subscription removes the daily limits on Magic Echo, Magic Beacon, and Magic Tab. That is the only paid tier in the desktop app.

Closed source vs open source
Msty is proprietary. Only its documentation and some supporting repositories are public. You are trusting a closed app with your documents, your chats, and your API keys.
AnythingLLM's code is on GitHub under the MIT license, with more than 66,000 stars. Anyone can audit how documents are stored, what leaves the machine, and how telemetry works. AnythingLLM collects anonymous usage telemetry by default, and you can turn it off in one click under Privacy & Data. You can read exactly what it sends in the source.
What you get without paying anything
Everything below is included in the free AnythingLLM Desktop app, for work or personal use:
- Document workspaces with a local vector database, citations, pinned documents, and connectors for GitHub, GitLab, YouTube, Confluence, Obsidian, and website crawls.
- Web search from the first chat, powered by You.com, with no API key.
- Agents with skills for web scraping, files, SQL, charts, Gmail, Google Calendar, Outlook, and generating Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PDF files.
- MCP with as many servers and tools as you want.
- Agent Flows to build your own tools without code, and scheduled jobs to run them on a timer.
- A Meeting Assistant that transcribes and summarizes your calls on your own computer.
- 40+ model providers, including local models, Ollama, LM Studio, OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, and OpenRouter. (Azure and Bedrock are Aurum-only in Msty.)

More than one device, more than one person
Msty stores data locally and does not sync between devices unless you pay for Studio Web. AnythingLLM has a free Android app that runs models on your phone and pairs with your desktop by scanning a QR code.
When your team needs it, AnythingLLM also runs as a multi-user server. Self-host it with Docker for free, or let us host a private instance for you on AnythingLLM Cloud. Msty's team plans start at five paid seats.
Switching from Msty
- Download AnythingLLM for macOS, Windows, or Linux.
- Pick a model from the built-in catalog, or connect the Ollama or LM Studio models you already use.
- Create a workspace and drag in the documents from your Knowledge Stacks.
It takes a few minutes, and it is free for work.
Frequently asked questions
›Can I use Msty for free at work?
Not under Msty's current terms. Msty Studio's free license covers private, non-commercial use, and its terms say using it in a trade or profession you are paid for does not qualify. Commercial use requires an Aurum license, which is $149 per user per year or $349 lifetime as of October 2026.
›Is AnythingLLM free for commercial use?
Yes. AnythingLLM Desktop is free to use for work and the core codebase is MIT-licensed. An optional Pro subscription only removes the daily limits on the Magic Echo, Magic Beacon, and Magic Tab features.
